Songs in my head

I have, for some unknown reason, had more songs than usual stuck in my head the past few days.

So far:

  • Lorelei – Styx
  • There's no business like show business – Ethel Merman singing
  • Release – Pearl Jam
  • Jolly Holiday – Mary Poppins
  • Radio, Radio – Elvis Costello
  • Three Little Birds – Bob Marley

Time to put The Weepies on and get the earwigs out.

Uh oh

I may have made a serious mistake.

In the spirit of the season (Baseball) I decided to participate in a fantasy baseball league (Yahoo).  I did this last year with a group of college friends and had fun.  So, before the season started, I sent some email around to last years participants and even got a couple of new people involved.  We did an autodraft and we're off.

In the meantime, I saw a thread on TotalFark.com  about a TF fantasy league (Yahoo).  I had also done a TF team last year so I signed up immediately.  The TF league did an autodraft and it's also up and running.

A couple of days later, I saw another TotalFark thread and signed up for another TF fantasy league (also Yahoo).  We did a live draft, which was a lot of fun.

It appears I might have an addiction to Yahoo Fantasy Baseball leagues.  Maybe I can get in on a couple of mid-season drafts.

Of course, my forecast is that I will fail miserably in all three leagues. In order to be successful I would have to devote daily attention to each of my teams.  It also probably doesn't help that I didn't do a tremendous amount of research before the drafts and that, when in doubt, I picked players based on my historical affinity for the team on which they play.

Most likely, I will concentrate any effort I make on the team in the league with my college buddies.  Bragging rights and all…

Pampas grass and hop vines

I finally got around to doing some yard work yesterday.  The lawn still looks horrible, but I did get the sprinkler system turned back on.  And, I'm going to take this Friday off to over-seed and put some more mulch down.

Every year I forget how sharp dead pampas grass is.  This year was no exception and I slashed one of my fingers again when I was cutting back the plants.  Perhaps, someday I'll be smarter than a plant.

I also remembered to check my hop vine:

Hop vine

It looks healthy.  I need to find a better way to train the vines this year.  I had a half way decent harvest of cone flowers last year, but I know it would have been better if I had trained the vines vertically.

I also really need to rack the stout I have in my primary into my secondary.  I've had issues obtaining sustained fermentation in the last couple of batches and I think it was because the basement was too cold.  Hopefully I can get it straightened out.

My grandfather’s tractor

My father's father died when I was 6 years old.  One of the few things I remember about him is his love for old gas engines and tractors.  He loved to work on repairing them and displaying them at the Butterfield Threshing Bee .

One of his favorites tractors was one like the Rumely Oil-pull shown below:

I remember sitting on my grandfather's lap as he drove this tractor in the parade at the Threshing Bee one year.  My dad still owns it.  Right now it is stored in a machine shed on the farmstead my grandfather and father owned.

My dad built a shed on his land in Pratt recently and we've talked about hauling the tractor down from Minnesota.  I would really like to clean it up and get it running again.

Baseball is expensive

First of all, I'm posting this from my phone so excuse the syntax and spelling. If I feel like cleaning it up when I get home I will.

Two seasons ago when I was working for the company who shall not be named I scored some dugout suite tickets at Kauffman Stadium. I got these tickets through a vendor who was trying to sell me a Storage Area Network.

Anyway, watching the Twins from literally next to their dugout was a blast. I took a good buddy with me (see viewofhope.org) and we wore our Twins gear and everything. We got to talk to Ron Gardenhire (Twins manager) and generally thought we were pretty cool.

Ever since then, we've been talking about getting a group of our friends and families together to rent one of the dugout suites for ourselves. Until yesterday. I called the Royal's ticket office to check on pricing and availability. $4000 for one suite. And that only comes with 30 tickets ($75 per additional). Unbelievable.

I think I'll stick to splurging on Club Level seats.
