Dylan, Berlin, Bay of Pigs invasion

I continue to suspect both my hearing and comprehension while I’m writing these. I thought that the first word of this stanza was “Building” filtered through Billy’s Long Island accent to sound like “Buildin'”.

I recently listened to the Piano Man (legacy edition) which includes a live performance of the entire “Cold Spring Harbor” album at WMMR in Philadelphia in 1972. It is perhaps one of the most amazing live performances I’ve ever heard. Billy at 22, sipping beers, playing tunes, and kicking ass with his band. This entire live recording is what I believe radio should be.

But anyway, back to Bob from Billy.

I’ve seen Bob in concert (early 2000s, Wichita, KS Century II). My wife and I went. What I remember the most is how many times she asked me, “WHAT is he saying?”

I’ve also been to Berlin (1993 maybe 94). I went there with a group of Bluffton University (nee College) on a hastily planned Easter holiday trip.

One of the people in this photograph is the biggest Bob Dylan fan I’ve ever known. Someone else is my second or third cousin. And another person hated the Jackson 5.

If you’d like to learn about the Bay of Pigs Invasion, I highly suggest reading this multi-volume history written by CIA historian Jack Pfeiffer. It is a definitive study of paranoia, Intelligence agency incompetence, and government/corporate collusion.

Hemingway, Eichmann, Stranger in a Strange Land

I thought I read something of yours once.

I think I wrote your section this way because of my reticence to be declarative.

Mr. Eichmann holds the title of world’s second worst Adolf. Although he may deserve top billing. The last two paragraphs of this biography are enough to damn the man, system, etc.

I was reading Variety and saw a blurb that Channing Tatum will be staring in a third installment of his movie franchise entitled, “Magic Mike From Mars.” That is a terrible joke.

Heinlein’s book sounds very interesting. I should probably read it.

Chubby Checker, Psycho, Belgians in the Congo

Beefy Rook started a dance craze called The Sit -n- Spin! He would resurface in 10 years as Heavy Stone (Backgammon piece you rube) with a remix entitled Spinnin’ Again!. He was last seen as one of the original MTV VJs:

Besides the mother of a yoghurt pooper, “Psycho” also featured Anthony Perkins. Mr. Perkins starred in the original adaptation of my favorite “musical theater” composition of all time:

Mix a little dystopia with some 1960s Sondheim and you get this awesome-ness. Ol’ Steve’s prescience regarding the downfall of downtowns and department stores is a little frightening. I wonder what he has to say about Amazon.com…..

“The King, not the Belgian government, effectively owned and controlled the Congo. Leopold administered the Congo in a notoriously brutal manner, using it to augment his own personal wealth.” I further understand why most European countries don’t like Belgium.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

Has ANYTHING decent come out of that country? Seriously, it’s like Moundridge freakin’ Kansas.

U-2, Syngman Rhee, Payola, Kennedy

Not this one:

CERTAINLY not this one (ugh):

But probably this one:

U-2 Spy Plane

The event here involved one Francis Gary Powers and “overflights” by the US into Soviet airspace. An official account (at least from the American perspective) can be found herein https://history.state.gov/milestones/1953-1960/u2-incident

I would consider the nomenclature “overflights” to be redundant. Are there underflights? Also, how did someone with the first name of Francis get a gig like that in the 1960s?

Syngman Rhee served as the head of state for South Korea from 1948-1960, including the Korean “Conflict”. He died in exile in Hawaii in 1965. I think I would like to die in exile in Hawaii. I also used to think that Billy sang “Sigmund” Rhee.

“Payola” references a (supposedly covert) pay-to-play debacle involving American record companies and radio stations. Back in 1959 Alan Freed and Dick Clark blah blah blah money under the table, music “Industry”, etc. Freed Suffered the most from this thin excuse to keep Rock (and/or Roll) Music off the radio and away from the CHILDREN! Instead, radio (at least the commercial veins) became a homogeneous hinterland ruled by playlists and corporations. Did you know that 117% of all commercial radio stations are owned by 2 corporations? Also, it is totally NOT illegal to publicly disclose that Corporation X is PAYING to have a particular song played 17 times every hour. Just make sure you tell someone that is the case, failure to do so = Payola.

And still, I miss being on the air.

I still have to write about Kennedy? Sheesh.

Camelot, OG filthy Papist Prez, mob cohort, son of Nazi lovin’ papa Joe, tragic.

Is that enough?
