My second

I got another greenlight on Fark.com last night.  I might be a little ashamed at the headline.  Then again, I might not.

I submitted it right before I gave Abe his bath last night and then promptly forgot about it.

A nice surprise this morning.  Perhaps this will balance out my horrible showing in my fantasy baseball leagues.

Pampas grass and hop vines

I finally got around to doing some yard work yesterday.  The lawn still looks horrible, but I did get the sprinkler system turned back on.  And, I'm going to take this Friday off to over-seed and put some more mulch down.

Every year I forget how sharp dead pampas grass is.  This year was no exception and I slashed one of my fingers again when I was cutting back the plants.  Perhaps, someday I'll be smarter than a plant.

I also remembered to check my hop vine:

Hop vine

It looks healthy.  I need to find a better way to train the vines this year.  I had a half way decent harvest of cone flowers last year, but I know it would have been better if I had trained the vines vertically.

I also really need to rack the stout I have in my primary into my secondary.  I've had issues obtaining sustained fermentation in the last couple of batches and I think it was because the basement was too cold.  Hopefully I can get it straightened out.

My grandfather’s tractor

My father's father died when I was 6 years old.  One of the few things I remember about him is his love for old gas engines and tractors.  He loved to work on repairing them and displaying them at the Butterfield Threshing Bee .

One of his favorites tractors was one like the Rumely Oil-pull shown below:

I remember sitting on my grandfather's lap as he drove this tractor in the parade at the Threshing Bee one year.  My dad still owns it.  Right now it is stored in a machine shed on the farmstead my grandfather and father owned.

My dad built a shed on his land in Pratt recently and we've talked about hauling the tractor down from Minnesota.  I would really like to clean it up and get it running again.

The new look

So, I've spent some time converting this site to WordPress.

Thus far, I've been fairly impressed with the interface and layout.  I found a decent, simple theme and made some minor modifications to it.

I'm also testing out a new plugin that will allow me to spell-check.  I have horrible spelling skills. If there is anyone out there actually reading this, let me know what you think.
